What Is Runescape

RuneScape is a massively multiplayer online role playing game designed by Jagex, Ltd. that transports players to a medieval, magical world full of dangerous monsters, heroic knights, dedicated tradesmen, and many amazing adventures.

Jagex offers two different types of accounts: free accounts and member accounts.  Gamers can play RuneScape for free, but they will only be able to access a portion of the world and complete a small number of quests.  Member accounts, on the other hand, have access to the entire world and can complete any quest.  There is a small monthly charge for member accounts.

Once they’ve created their character, players new to RuneScape will find themselves on Tutorial Island, a small area designed to introduce players to combat, items, and how to navigate through the world.  Here players will combat giant rodents, create a fire, and cast a magical spell for the first time. 

Once players leave Tutorial Island, they will enter into the huge world of RuneScape.  New players must beware: some areas are inhabited by very powerful beasts.  Generally, monsters near the same levels stick together, so players can tell how strong most of the creatures in an area are by the look of a few of them.  Once engaged in combat, players can attack their foes using short-range weapons like swords and axes, wound them from afar with bows and arrows, or use powerful sorcery to defeat them.

Survival in the world of RuneScape requires more than having good combat skills, however.  Players will also need to master survival skills in order to eat, create certain items, and survive in some of the more barren areas.  Cooking, crafting, mining, smithing, fishing, stealing, and even farming are all skills players can practice and master.  By mastering a skill, players can create new items to use or sell to other, and some quests can only be completed by players who have mastered specific professions.

Quests provide a way for characters to receive special weapons or extra gold.  Each quest has a specific beginning point, usually a character the player has to talk to.  Some quests are short, requiring a player to retrieve or create an item or slay a specific monster, but some quests take longer and have multiple steps.  Quests are divided into standard and member categories and further divided into four groups: novice, intermediate, experienced, and master quests.  Players should carefully read the quest objectives so as not to take on a quest they can’t complete.
